Rt Honourable Shoge Quadri, Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council, spoke to press men on Saturday May 17 to address the inconsistencies arising from the initial unilateral postponement of the Congress by the students’ union executives.

He had earlier before the postponement, granted an interview with the press where he condemned strongly the late release of an official memo for the Congress by the Students’ Union, calling it a breach of resolution.

“There was a resolution, but it came as a surprise that even many hours after the sitting, the notice just came out this morning as a random WhatsApp message. But it was a surprise again, we saw that it was just random.”.

He further stated that the information was not put in a letterhead until he reached out to the President to correct the error.

Speaking further, he declared that the SU was in breach of the resolution, and the offence will be added to already standing charges.

“It is now in breach of the resolution made by the Council. That has now be added as a charge to the already standing charges.” He stated.

After the postponement, the press reached out to the Speaker again to get his thoughts on it.

The Speaker affirmed that based on the fact that over two hours had gone by, and most of the names on the directory list were absent, the Congress could not hold as planned.

He believed the Union was ill-prepared for it.

He also stated that another Congress would be called within a week, with early preparation to ensure that quorum is attained.

He further stated that the SRC had been referred to the Disciplinary Committee twice in a day for the poor publicity and disregard of the SRC resolutions.

The Speaker promised that bearing in mind the encroaching course registration deadline, the house would meet as soon as possible to move motions for a new date for Congress.

As of press time, the SRC had yet to call a sitting.
