Every great beginning deserves a crowned ending. The first edition of the UI Unity Cup kicked off on July 4 and concluded on July 20, with United Superstar FC (USFC) emerging as the champions.  The historic event, whichh hosted eight teams, featured four teams from the University of Ibadan main campus and four from the University of Ibadan Distance Learning Centre (UI’DLC). It was filled with exciting encounters, dramatic comebacks, individual performances, and unforgettable moments.  The competition began with two groups, Group A and Group B, each comprising four teams.  Group A featured USFC, DA-EBS, Diggers FC, and Vortex FC, with the first two teams representing the main campus and the latter two from UI’DLC. Group B consisted of TomTom FC, Rebels FC, Goal Diggers FC, and Blaze FC, with the first two from the UI main campus and the remaining teams from UI’DLC.  The contest for the championship opened with a Group A clash between Vortex FC and DA-EBS FC. Despite both sides creating chances, the full-time scoreline proved otherwise, with the match ending goalless.  Later in the day, USFC defeated Diggers FC by three goals to one, with Diggers FC securing a consolation goal before the final whistle. The victory earned USFC their first three points and sent them to the top of the group.  In Group B, Blaze FC defeated Rebels FC 4-2 in an entertaining encounter. The final match of the day saw another fiercely contested affair as Goal Diggers FC held TomTom FC in check until the closing minutes, when Eme, their centre forward, scored the decisive goal to seal the win for his side.  At the end of the group stage, USFC, TomTom FC, Goal Diggers FC, and DA-EBS progressed to the semi-finals with 15, 12, 13, and 7 point,s respectively. DA-EBS narrowly qualified, earning three points after receiving a walkover from Vortex Fc, who failed to appear for the fixture after losing all their previous matches in the competition.  With the group stage concluded, attention shifted to the semi-finals, where the remaining four teams battled over two legs for a place in the final.  The first leg took place on Wednesday, July 15. The opening match saw USFC face Goal Diggers FC. The game opened with a free-kick goal from John, USFC’s captain, before Mubarak restored parity for Goal Diggers. The second half produced another twist as Richard put Goal Diggers ahead, while Oshimen, USFC’s forward, equalised to ensure the first leg ended in a draw.  DA-EBS and TomTom FC also produced a thrilling encounter in the second semi-final first leg. The first half ended with TomTom FC two goals ahead through Baloo, leaving their opponents with a difficult task. The second half remained in TomTom’s control until DA-EBS staged a remarkable comeback. Within five minutes, Dr. Show and Ayanfe scored to bring the game level. Despite late pressure from both sides, the match ended 2-2.  On July 17, the deciding match began with TomTom FC and DA-EBS facing off once again. The game seemed destined for a penalty shootout as both teams failed to convert their chances.  However, while spectators awaited the final whistle, Basit converted the last touch of the game into a nightmare for DA-EBS, securing a place in the final for TomTom FC.  To determine the other finalist, USFC once again faced Goal Diggers FC. The match began with both teams sticking to their usual playing style. Kevwe scored from a rebound, giving USFC the lead at half-time. The second half became a thrilling encounter as USFC doubled their advantage,e but almost lost their grip after Goal Diggers were awarded a penalty. However, the USFC goalkeeper came to the rescue with an incredible save. A few minutes before full-time, Goal Diggers were awarded another penalty, which they converted, but USFC held on to secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the final.  With the finalists confirmed, all roads led to the Old Football Pitch, where USFC and TomTom FC squared off for the maiden UI Unity Cup title.  It was the day that would separate the gold medallists from the silver medallists. As the sun receded, the Old Football Pitch roared with fans from both sides, all eyes fixed on the medals and trophy, while the crates of eggs for the individual award winners also drew attention.  USFC stormed the pitch in their new light blue shirts with green stripes, while TomTom FC, dressed in black, entered confidently, known for their attacking style.  USFC settled into the game with their possession-based midfield as expected, but just a few minutes in, TomTom FC won a corner following a defensive clearance. The well-delivered corner found the head of a TomTom player, but Tomiwa, the USFC goalkeeper, produced an excellent save to deny the opening goal.  The tempo continued with both sides battling for possession, hustling for the ball, winning successive fouls, and mounting pressure, but neither side could convert their chances. The first half ended goalless.  The referee signalled the start of the second half. Unlike the first, the intensity increased as both teams looked to exploit open spaces. The support from the crowd kept both sides pushing forward. Ozil, USFC’s defensive midfielder, shielded his defence well, allowing his team to launch counterattacks. The referee stopped play for medical attention after Owen, a USFC forward, collided with Tomiwa, the USFC goalkeeper, leaving him lying motionless on the pitch.  USFC won a corner, which was perfectly placed onto the head of one of their players, but the effort struck the crossbar. Minutes later, TomTom defender Micah also headed a corner against the crossbar, leaving both sides frustrated.  Despite time running out, the USFC midfield remained composed, creating passes and supporting the defensive line.  Patrick, USFC’s centre-back, and Micah of TomTom FC stood out with their aerial dominance, clearing several dangerous balls. All efforts proved futile by the final whistle. According to the rules, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.  USFC retained their goalkeeper, while TomTom FC introduced Kesh. USFC converted their first kick, while TomTom FC missed their first two, with one saved by the goalkeeper and the other striking the post. The shootout ended 4-2 as the pitch erupted when Eno converted USFC’s fifth kick. And so, USFC emerged as the winners of the first edition of the UI Unity Cup, finishing the tournament unbeaten.  The tournament reached its climax with the presentation of medals, certificates, and individual awards, while the celebrations by the champions brought the first edition of the UI Unity Cup to a memorable close.  USFC goalkeeper Olofintila Oluwatomiwa Ayomide was named Best Goalkeeper of the tournament after a series of outstanding performances, including his decisive role in the penalty shootout during the final.  His teammate, Ayoola Yusuf Olatunji, emerged as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), having impressed throughout the competition with his commanding performances in midfield.  Despite finishing as runners-up, TomTom FC’s Alawode Micah claimed the Highest Goal Scorer award for his goal-scoring exploits during the tournament.  …
