A project aimed at the innovation and adaptation to climate change funded by the French Embassy has kicked-off at the University of Ibadan.
This development is announced in a statement by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka on Friday, August 7th.
The project which is the “Development of a Weather Based Reference Value for Soyabean and Maize in Oyo state,” was proposed by the researchers of the University after discussions with other researchers from Nigerian and French Universities in Abuja and France on the “FSPI project and Innovation in Adapting to Climate Change (AIRACC): A seed project to Forster Franco-Nigerian collaboration.”
The VC also said the project under a proposal related to “Innovation and Adaptation to Climate Change Project” is the result of the existing relationship between the University and French Universities which is facilitated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof Adebola Ekanola.
Prof Olayinka further added that the approved land for the project is the Teaching and Research Farm of the University and that constructions have started.
He said: “The Drainage Lysimeters for the project have been constructed and the sensors (Portable Pyranometer, Soil Moisture Sensors (ONSET Hobo), Soil Temperature Sensors, Tipping Bucket Rain Guage, HOBO USB Micro Station Data Logger, etc) have also been ordered. The construction of the rain shelter is on the way.”
The VC who was present at the installation of the Drainage Lysimeters on August 6, alongside the two Deputy Vice Chancellors, pledged his support towards the realisation of the project.
He stated: ” The University administration will continue to support the researchers in order to ensure a timely completion of the research project. Grateful acknowledgement is extended to the French Embassy for the generous funding provided.”
