Two alumni of the University of Ibadan by the names Gbemisola Osadua and Joel Popoola have recently made their alma mater, University of Ibadan proud through their feats in the international sphere.
Gbemisola, a graduate of law and the first female presidential candidate at the institution since the restoration of the Student Union in the 2010/2011 academic session has recently emerged as the first African president of the graduate law society at the University College London, having defeated six other opponents across different nationalists to win the election.
Similarly, Joel Popoola, a Nigerian-Briton, who was also a Masters student at the Department of Psychology, University of Ibadan, has launched a widely acclaimed digital democracy project. According to him, the project is “aimed at ensuring accountability on the part of public office holders as well as eradicating fake news”.
“This digital democracy project also provides an avenue for citizens to rate their leaders. It will also help to bridge the gap between the rulers and the rules, in terms of dealing directly with the electorates, thereby, bringing to limelight the true definition of democracy as the “rule by the people” he said.
“The phenomenon of fake news and its impact on democracy all over the world needs to be nipped in the buds if, nations are concerned about their unity and harmony”, he added.
