“Students With Pending Cases Before The SDC Are Ineligible To Contest For Student-occupied Offices.” – UI’SRC on Nice Linus’ Disqualification

The University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council in a memo dated 21st March, confirmed that Nice Linus will not be taking office as Majority Leader of Awo hall constituency, neither will she be a member of the Student Representative Council.

This comes after Deputy Registrar, T. I. Musa disqualified Nice Linus, from the SRC election, stopping her from taking office in the 12th Assembly of the Students’ Representative Council.

The memo explained that members of the executive council and representatives from the UI’SRC had met with the Dean of Students who confirmed that “students with pending cases before the Students Disciplinary Committee are ineligible to contest for student-occupied offices.”

Recall that Nice Linus and two other students currently have a pending case with the SDC following their involvement in a protest against the school fee hike in May 2024.

The memo explained that some sections of the UI’SU Constitution have been overridden by current senate regulations and are no longer in force.

“Notably, some sections of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution (revised in 1998/1999) are no longer in force, overridden by new Senate Regulations.’‘

“Following the Students Union’s proscription in 2017, the Senate Committee saddled with the responsibility of reinstating the Union recommended changes, including minimum CGPA requirements for officers and addressing pending SDC cases which our constitution (revised in 1998/1999) as a Union did not cater for” the memo stated.

The SRC further promised to review the constitution to “prevent similar controversies from arising in the future.”

They also stated that they have the assurance of the Dean of Students that the amendment will be promptly forwarded to the Senate and swift action will be taken.

The memo also addressed the issue of battery and harassment experienced by Nice Linus and other students, stating that the Union President, Covenant Odedele along with his Executive Council Members met with the Chief Security Officer to express concern over these issues.

The CSO pledged to handle such issues with utmost care in the future while reiterating his commitment to student security.
