MTN CEO, Karl Toriola, Delivers Lecture as Sigma Club Holds 11th Public Lecture

The Sigma Club, University of Ibadan, held it’s 11th Public Lecture on Thursday, July 3 at the UI Alumni Hall.

The lecture was delivered by the CEO, MTN Nigeria, Dr. Karl Toriola.

Speaking on the topic, “Leveraging Technology and Digital Education for Mass Employment; Wealth Creation and Poverty Alleviation,” Dr. Karl highlighted data from research that showed the dwindling unemployment rate in Nigeria, from 6.0% to 3.1%.

He stated, however, that despite the drastic drop, the change can hardly be felt by many youths.

He cited that it (the drop) is merely a a result of “definition change.”

“The digital economy in Nigeria is currently valued at 88 billion naira. The serviceable fibre market is valued at 1.8 trillion naira. Nigeria aim to train 20 billion people by 2030. Nigeria youths are ready, we just need to provide opportunities for them to thrive.” Dr Karl Toriola explained in his lecture, reinforcing the importance of technology in the society, and the plan of wealth creation to aid the growth of society.

Following his speech, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, made an appearance along with his chiefs and some other members of his palace.

He also addressed the gathering, as the royal Father of the day.

Speaking to the youths, he said, “Never stop learning… Never underestimate the power of your ideas. Your generation has the potential to shape the future of our nation.”

The event was held in honour of Old Chief Dr. Adesola Kazeem, Adedutan, to commemorate Sigma Club’s 75th anniversary.

Other invited guests were the Governor of Oyo state His excellency, Engr Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Honourable Folajimi Oyekunle; the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin), University of Ibadan, Prof. Peter Olapegba; the Father of the day, Old Sigmaite Dr. Gani Adeniran, the Grand patron of the day, Prof Ogunmola Gabriel, pro chancellor, Lead City University, and other dignitaries.

The Honouree, Old Chief Dr. Adesola Kazeem Adebutan, gave his remark.

He thanked the University for the honour of being named one of the most distinguished alumnus of the University.

He also expressed appreciation to the guest speaker, Dr. Karl whom he calls his brother, for honouring the call.

He further advised students present to learn and adapt to situations as they change so they are not left behind.

He warned also that only with adaptability and the right attitude, could one attain the right altitude.
