This is a question every student needs to reflect on. Why striving for 7points? Why striving for a first class? Why striving for a degree?… A random interview of various students of this prestigious university has shown that many students do not know why they have come to the university. Many do not even have the intention of using the certificate which accounts for why some students are nonchalant about their studies.
A fallacious and deceptive attitude has been attached to education, especially education at the tertiary level. This is why ridiculous cases are heard such as students buying their way to tertiary institutions. Students who are not qualified and have not fully learnt the basics find their way to the university. When these destructive elements eventually get to the university, they find it difficult to cope with the intellectual rigour therefore, they run from one department to another looking for where to get ‘a seven’.
Education in our time has been drastically bastardized and abused. There is a serious need to separate the plants from the weed. The purpose of education, which is to boost ones’ intellectual capacity and not just to put ink on paper, must be achieved. The number of university applicants increases every year at par with the number of university graduates. It is actually ironical that with this mass number of graduates, the problems of our society are not being reduced, rather, they are being multiplied. Where then are we to place these supposed problem solvers?
It is a new semester already and students are about their activities. It would be of the best benefit of all if every student can be determined to study and learn for the sake of being relevant in the society and not just for the certificate. Because people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
