Work in Progress, As UI Management Clears Clogged Drainages Following Flooding Along Tafawa Balewa Road

By Faith Ajewole

Following weeks of persistent waterlogging, the University of Ibadan management has commenced extensive desilting and clearing of drainage systems along the road linking Tafawa Balewa and Nnamdi Azikiwe Halls.
The intervention follows growing concerns over the section being submerged since the onset of the semester’s rains, largely due to a combination of dilapidated road surfaces and severely blocked gutters.

However, the situation reached a breaking point on May 30, 2026, when heavy rainfall resulted in a major overflow, rendering the road nearly impassable. In a swift response to the escalation, university management deployed maintenance teams the same day to begin clearing the thick overgrowth and debris that had choked the drainage channels.

The restoration exercise, which began on Saturday, continued through Sunday, May 31st, and remains ongoing as of today, June 1st, 2026.

Workers are still on-site finishing the evacuation of waste. With the removal of clogging materials and tall grasses from the gutters, water has begun to flow freely once again.

While the immediate drainage issue is being addressed, road users remain hopeful that the management will also consider long-term repairs to the road surface to prevent future occurrences of stagnant water.
