The University of Ibadan hosted the 8th edition of the Spike Rangers Volleyball Tournament on May 29th and 30th, at the SUB pitch, bringing together volleyball teams and players from across Southwest Nigeria in what organisers described as the tournament’s most expansive edition yet.
Traditionally, it has always been an intra-Oyo State competition featuring only teams within the state. Still, this year’s tournament marked a significant milestone by welcoming clubs and players from outside Ibadan. Participants came from locations including Abeokuta, Lagos, and Ile-Ife, while some Premier League volleyball players also featured in the competition, raising the tournament’s competitive standard.
The tournament commenced on May 29 with the group-stage matches. The organisers drew twelve teams into four groups of three, each competing for places in the knockout rounds. At the end of the group stage, one team from each group exited, reducing the field from twelve to eight.
The tournament saw the elimination of the University of Ibadan Team B (UI 2), University College Hospital (UCH), Phoenix, and Predator at this stage.
The competition intensified on the second day as the remaining teams advanced to the quarterfinals. The eight qualified teams faced off in four knockout fixtures, with winners progressing to the semifinals.

The semifinals featured four teams competing in two matches for places in the final. Victorious teams advanced to contest the championship title, while the losing teams battled for third place.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Liberty Bombers emerged as champions of the men’s category. Eleyele Spikers secured second place, while Mokola Barracks finished third.
In the women’s category, Spike Rangers claimed the championship title, with the Tiger Spikers team finishing as runners-up and the KOMO Team securing third place.

Speaking on the tournament, Ayomide, a player from UCH, described the competition as both exciting and exhilarating. He noted that the opportunity to compete alongside and watch established players, including Premier League stars, made the experience particularly memorable and inspiring.
The expanded format of the tournament heightened the level of competition, and the enthusiastic turnout contributed to a memorable edition of the Spike Rangers Volleyball Tournament, leaving participants and spectators anticipating future editions.
