The Great Independence Hall Constituency at the University of Ibadan Students Representative Council has condemned the unilateral and unconstitutional conferment of an honorary membership on Oyo State political aspirant, Hon. Odidiomo, following a high-profile visit from SRC Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludele John and a selected group of persons.

In a letter signed by the constituency’s majority leader, Hon. Ugochukwu Godswill, dated July 31, 2026, addressed to the UISU Students Representative Council, the hall constituency alleged that the honorary membership was conferred without following the procedures stipulated in the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution.
“The Great Independence Hall Constituency writes to register its firm and unequivocal objection to the unilateral and unconstitutional conferment of an Honorary Membership on an Oyo State political aspirant under the so-called “UISU Legislative Summit Series.” This action was taken in flagrant disregard of the Constitution and without the approval it expressly requires. We consider this not a mere procedural lapse, but a direct violation of the governing document of this Union.”
The legislators also condemned the use of the official UISU logo alongside the political aspirant’s image. They argued that the branding falsely implies an official endorsement by the Students’ Union without the consent of the student body, recklessly compromising the Union’s political neutrality.
“Furthermore, the use of the official UI’SU logo on merchandise bearing the donor’s image is unacceptable and cannot be dismissed as an oversight. It creates the false and misleading impression that the Students’ Union has officially endorsed a political aspirant, when no such decision was ever taken by this Council or by the general membership. This is a reckless compromise of the Union’s political neutrality, and those responsible must be prepared to account for it.”
The legislators further maintained that the honorary membership was unconstitutional, and they would not sit still and witness the departure from the constitution.
“Article III, Section 1(b) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution is unambiguous: Honorary Membership may only be conferred upon the approval of at least two-thirds of the members of the SRC present and voting at a special meeting. There is no ambiguity here to hide behind, and no departure from this provision will be tolerated or explained away. We will not accept silence, delay, or evasive parliamentary manoeuvring on this matter.”
Citing Article XXIV, Section 1 of the constitution, the constituency demanded that the Office of the Speaker convene an emergency sitting without delay to address the constitutional breach and hold accountable those responsible for the conferment.
Warning against delays or evasive manoeuvres, the legislators emphasised their resolve to take further action:
“We expect the Council to act decisively and without further delay, and we reserve the right to escalate this matter through all legitimate constitutional channels should this Council fail to respond appropriately.”
