The interfaculty category of Jaw War 2026 commenced on Thursday, September 3, with 18 faculties participating in nine debates at the New Faculty Lecture Theatre, University of Ibadan.
The opening round brought together faculties to debate motions on issues spanning governance, development, technology and other matters of national interest, as participants competed for places in the next stage of the competition.
The debates were judged by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Demola Lewis, alongside Mr Victor Jonathan and Prince David Adeoye. Before the contests began, Jonathan explained the judging criteria, while timekeeper Victor Adedoyin outlined the timing rules for the speakers.
Each speaker was given five minutes to present their arguments. The judging criteria covered content and factual accuracy, delivery, persuasiveness, refutation, logic, structure and organisation, appearance and time management.
The nine contests produced varying margins, with some faculties recording relatively close scores. The Faculty of Education recorded the highest score of the round with 85.58 per cent against Clinical Sciences, which scored 81.25 per cent. Clinical Sciences was subsequently named Best Loser, while Ojo Esther of Education was recognised as Best Speaker.
Elsewhere, Arts recorded 81.70 per cent against Nursing’s 78.55 per cent, while Social Sciences scored 78.83 per cent against Dentistry’s 74.80 per cent. Pharmacy recorded 79.99 per cent against Environmental Design and Management’s 69.65 per cent, while Technology scored 78.80 per cent against Veterinary Medicine’s 63.45 per cent.
Economics recorded 78.75 per cent against Public Health’s 69.00 per cent. Basic Medical Sciences scored 78.17 per cent against Renewable and Natural Resources’ 69.90 per cent, while Agriculture recorded 77.80 per cent against Computing’s 62.60 per cent. Law completed the round’s results with 71.95 per cent against Science’s 68.10 per cent.
The first round moves the participating faculties into the next phase of the interfaculty category as Jaw War 2026 continues.
