UI Moves to Regulate AI Use, Sets Up Ethics Committee

The University of Ibadan has begun moves to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within its academic community, with a focus on ensuring ethical compliance among staff and students.

This follows the inauguration of a Committee on the University Policy for the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence by the Vice-Chancellor, Kayode Adebowale.

Speaking at the event, Professor Adebowale described artificial intelligence as a valuable tool with significant benefits for innovation, learning, and problem-solving. However, he noted that its rapid development and dynamic nature make it susceptible to misuse if not properly guided.
He stressed the importance of human oversight in the deployment of AI tools, particularly within the university environment, and called for responsible usage among both staff and students.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the need for a comprehensive policy framework that will guide ethical practices, ensure accountability and prevent abuse of AI technologies within the institution. He added that the establishment of the committee is a timely step, noting that compliance with the policy will be expected once it is fully implemented.

Chairing the committee is Professor O.F.W. Onifade, Director of the Distance Learning Centre, who commended the initiative and acknowledged the growing global attention to ethical AI practices.

Professor Onifade referenced recent efforts by UNESCO in promoting ethical standards for artificial intelligence, noting that the university’s policy would align with international best practices while addressing its specific needs.
He assured that the committee would work towards developing a robust and relevant policy to guide AI usage across the university.

The committee is expected to submit a policy framework that will define acceptable standards for the use of artificial intelligence within the University of Ibadan.

Other members of the committee are:

Professor A. S. O. Ogunjuyigbe (Provost, Postgraduate College)

Professor A. B. Adeyemo (Dean, Faculty of Computing)

Professor Ibiyinka T. Ayorinde (Department of Software Engineering)
