Registration has officially opened for the 2026 edition of the Seals Cup, the University of Ibadan’s flagship interdepartmental football tournament, with organisers unveiling new adjustments aimed at improving competition and participation.
The announcement was made by the Seals Cup Committee in a broadcast message released on Sunday, April 5, marking the start of what is widely regarded as one of the most anticipated sporting events on campus.
According to the committee, registration commenced at 9 p.m. on Sunday and will remain open until all available slots are filled. A total of 48 slots have been allocated for this year’s tournament, comprising 32 slots for the male category and 16 for the female category.
Departments interested in participating are required to pay a registration fee of ₦32,000 for the male competition and ₦15,000 for the female category. The new fees reflect an increase from the previous edition, where registration stood at ₦25,000 and ₦10,000 respectively.
Among the notable changes is an expansion in squad sizes for both male and female categories, a move expected to give teams more depth and flexibility. In addition, the female competition will transition from a five-a-side format to a seven-a-side structure, a shift aimed at improving gameplay and increasing inclusivity.
While the official date for the tournament has not yet been announced, anticipation is already building across campus as departments prepare to secure their spots in the competition.
Over the years, the Seals Cup has grown into more than just a football tournament, evolving into a major fixture in the university’s sporting calendar and a platform for showcasing talent, rivalry and community spirit.
