The University of Ibadan, has seen its impressive run at the DUEL University Competition 2026, halted in the semi-finals following a 101–43 defeat to Obafemi Awolowo University.

Coming into the semi-final clash on the back of three consecutive victories, UI had established itself as one of the standout teams in the competition. However, despite a promising start, the team was unable to sustain its momentum against the OAU team.

In the Quick Buzz segment, both teams opened strongly, ending the first quarter in a 50–50 tie, reflecting an evenly matched contest at the onset. However, as the round progressed, the pressure of speed and precision began to take its toll on UI.

A series of incorrect responses, delivered at a faster pace, resulted in negative scoring, ultimately affecting the team’s overall stability and performance. This shift created a clear advantage for OAU, whose consistency and accuracy saw them pull ahead decisively.

The outcome marks the end of UI’s journey to the final, as OAU advances to compete for the championship title.

Despite the setback, UI remains in contention for a podium finish. The team is set to face the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in the third-place match, while OAU will take on the Federal University of Technology, Akure in the finals.

Having demonstrated resilience, intellectual depth, and strong teamwork throughout the competition, UI now turns its focus to restrategizing ahead of the final round, with the aim of securing a third-place finish.
