A professor of Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery, Professor Temitope Alonge has said that with the right resources the veil over bone pain can be removed and definite diagnosis can be removed before irreversible damage sets in.
He said this recently while delivering the first inaugural lecture, Arrest the 1st leg of the quarter: Bone infraction or bon infection from the division of Orthopaedic and Trauma of department of Surgery, University of Ibadan and 445th inaugural lecture at Trenchard hall, University of Ibadan.
According to him, the four legs of the doctoral quartet of his medical journey closely mirror a dreaded bone disease called osteomyelitis. “I studied ways of differentiating acute bone pain due to bacterial infection from bone pain following ischemia or occlusion of the osseous vessel in people living with sickle cell.”
He described pain as an unpleasant stimulus and proprioceptive pain as one of the commonest reason why people attend the hospital because it may be a pointer, worsening of a disease or even present in recovery phase of a disease. And pain in bone, which assist in human movement could be excruciating and really needs to be addressed.
While giving his recommendations, he proposed MCP-1 and use of dual energy CD- Dent which in his words, “is now been taunted as the possible problem solving tool.”
