The Obafemi Awolowo Hall presidential aspirant, lost the presidential seat yesterday as she was not able to secure the two-third of the total vote cast after the election was conducted and result was collated.

The aspirant who is a postgraduate student as provided by the constitution (only postgraduate can occupy the position of the hall president) performed below expectation during the electoral process which include the screening and the press night where she had the lowest point in both and could not marshal out her feasible plans for the Awo hall residents during the 2015/2016 Academic session.

While many of the residents in Awo hall are happy about the outcome of the election; they also appeal to the legislative arm of the hall to amend the constitution and give the control of the executive council to the undergraduates.

Odetoyinbo Tobiloba, 300 level Sociology expressed said: “It can be seen as a landmark failure, breath-taking and ground breaking one. It has never happened in UI for someone to go unopposed and still lost. It means that awoites are becoming politically aggressive these days. A similar reaction occurred in the case of the social and welfare minister despite the fact that Miss Bibire had great plans, she wasn’t elected”

Complementing Miss Odetoyinbo’s remark, Miss Ore Kiyesi, 300 level Physiology said: “she wasn’t what we wanted. I wasn’t surprised in any way about the fact that she wasn’t elected. I just don’t understand why the postgraduate students refused to come out to contest for the position. Perhaps they feel caged in because everything majorly relate to the undergraduates. I really hope that they amend the constitution so as to make provision for undergraduates to be able to go for the position. It shouldn’t be restricted to postgraduate”

Also commenting on the election in Awo hall was Agbajelola Funmilayo, 300level Economics: “It wasn’t shocking at all because I didn’t expect her to win and I am happy that she wasn’t elected. She failed to impress us at the press night and manifesto night as she didn’t have plans beyond ensuring that there will be fuel in the hall’s generator. I want the Hall Representative Council to review the constitution and let under-graduate and post-graduate students compete for the post and not just post-graduate students.”

However, the elected vice-president, Miss Ojemuyide Susan has been sworn-in as the acting President of Awo hall till further notice.

In a similar vein, the proposed Speaker of the legislative arm of Sultan Bello Hall could not gather enough votes that would allow him to contest during the in-house election of the legislative arm.
