The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of University of Ibadan has directed Queen Elizabeth II Hall Chairperson, Miss Shalewa Muhammed to constitute a Constitution amendment committee.

This is contained in a letter sent on November 7, 2016 to the Hall Chairperson after several complaints the house received through the honourables from Queens Hall Constituency about the need to have a legislative arm.

According to the letter signed by the Speaker of the Council, Rt. Hon. Onifade Bello, the Students’ Representative Council stated that:

“The leadership of the SRC has received series of complaints through the Honourables from your constituency that the residents of your hall request the constituting of a Legislative Arm… the SRC enjoins you to set up the Constitution Amendment Committee as soon as possible.”

The letter reads in part:

‘In line with Article 17(2-3), “Amendment and interpretation” of the 1996 Hall Constitution of Queen Elizabeth II, which states, “(2) All proposals for amendment of any provisions of this constitution shall be in writing to the Student Executive Council. (3) The Student Executive Council shall on receipt of such proposals constitute a Constitution Amendment Committee which shall be made up of seven members duly appointed by the Executive Council’.

The SRC urged Queens Hall executives to set up the constitution Amendment Committee as soon as possible with two members each from the Executive council, members of the SRC of Queen Elizabeth II constituency, members of the congress and a member of the Hall Press organization as committee members.

However, it should be recalled that the residents of the hall last Month had staged a protest in the hall against the unbefitting Hall package that was given to them and other shortcomings on the part of the executives. It was said that in a bid to forestall such mishap in future, there was the need to create a body which will represent the interest and protect the right of the students who resides in the Hall as well as checkmate the activities and excesses of the Hall’s Executives.
