Fatima Lawson, PhD, a school principal in the United States, has called on Nigerian women to move beyond cheerleader roles in politics.
She made this call during the online workshop organised by AWA’RAWA MOVEMENT on the 31st of July.
The educationist stressed the need for female participation in democratic processes to aid development.
“Women participating in politics does not mean household duties are put on hold,” she explained.
Dr Mutiat Oladejo, who also spoke at the event, corroborated Lawson’s stance. She encouraged women who hold positions within government to aid other women who might want to climb the stairs.
Asked whether the Ministry for Women Affairs in Nigeria has failed in aiding female participation in political processes, Dr. Mutiat said “We cannot say the Ministry for Women Affairs is functioning.” She harped that measures must be put in place to ensure female participation in politics.”
AWA’RAWA MOVEMENT is a youth led movement whose purpose is to serve as a medium for sensitization and increase the level of patriotism among the youths.
