Breaking: UI Suspends Screening Of VC Aspirants

The governing council of the University of Ibadan has suspended the screening of the 6 shortlisted candidates to appoint the next VC of the institution which was set to hold today, Wednesday.
Earlier today, UI workers protested within the university community against an alleged plan to impose Prof. Kayode Adebowale as the next VC. The protest was aimed at disrupting the screening of the 6 shortlisted candidate by the governing council ably chaired by Nde Joshua Waklek. They were seen with placards bearing inscriptions such as: “impose Adebowale, shut down UI for 5 years, ” “ We shall never work with Alatise again.”

It should be recalled that the outgoing VC, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, had earlier been accused of supporting a candidate, Prof. Adebowale, DVC (Admin)
According to OyoInsight, the workers also rejected Prof. Femi Mimiko alleging that he is anti-workers judging from his tenure as the VC of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) between the period of 2010-2015.
The institution NASU Chairman, Mr. Malachy Etim, told NAN that the protest was aimed at showing their resentment for the flawed selection process of vice-chancellor for the institution. “They want to a impose candidate on us through the faulty process and we are saying we cannot accept any imposition.”
“ Yes, we have had an internal crisis before, but the one that triggered today’s protest is the selection process. We are holding our congress right away and shall come up with a position in the event that the committee announces the candidate we think it wants to impose on us” he explained.

The SSANU Chairman, Mr. Wale Akinremi also told NAN that members of the screening committee elected from the university senate board “got there through manipulated and fraudulent electoral process. We will never work with the candidate they plan to impose on us. We have even locked the varsity’s gate”
“We must restart the process. Prof. Idowu Olayinka, the sitting vice-chancellor, must hand over to an acting vice-chancellor.” He emphasized.
The tenure of the outgoing VC will lapse by Novermber 31st while the new VC is expected to resume on the December 1.
