Bidding for Betterment

“Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” – Mother Teresa

There are so many things that can define a man’s life, but the principal of it is the man himself. Some people believe that there is a god who has made life what it is, and the best for them is to fill in, that no matter the challenges, there is really nothing they can do but to leave it in the hand of the god, who they say laughs when men talk about tomorrow. Men like these know not tomorrow and plan not for the days to come, they only act as fillers. There are others, who believe that they are the lord of their lives, though know that there is a god. They plan for each day, presupposing the other day and using today as a gift, one which must be cherished and lived well; always responsible for their works.

Now that a new semester begins, it is expedient for all to know where they stand in order to for them to know where next to put their feet. A better and smooth continuity starts by understanding the intricacies of what has been done, what is on and what should be done for the better.

Nothing happens to advance potentials and the piled up knowledge until a person is determined and agrees to be responsible, no matter the inclusive terms and conditions.

A date has been fixed for the election and the choosing of key positions in and for the University community. Among them is the long awaited Student Union election, which was postponed due to some challenges which were and perhaps are still to be resolved completely. Time will tell if the need for the postponement will lead to positivity in all and for all.

Another one of these key positions is the choosing of the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan. Their CVs were read out, their voices were heard, and their proposals and achievements were amplified at the interactive session during the 2015 Community Forum held at the Trenchard Hall. The University of Ibadan Staff and Students Unions organized the forum to serve as a level-playing-ground for all, but the question to be asked is; are all animals equal? What will come of all these processes of choosing at the long run – are they going to be processes that can be managed or that will be prejudicial?

It is bad to be unfair by judging oneself by personal intentions while judging others by their action but it is good if according to Ernest Hemingway advised; “Never mistake motion for action” that our debates and motions; intelligent write-ups that grace the press boards are supplemented by the performance of the hand; a desire to change ourselves.

Howard Markman, a professor of psychology in the University of Denver once said that “The breakthrough comes when we realize that by making even small changes in ourselves, we can effect big, positive changes.”

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan greets everyone welcome to a new semester. The bid to be better has started again. A storm never announces it coming, but one is proven to be strong when one saddles steadily no matter the waves and break. United we stand, divided we fall is not a mere saying; one not to be adhered to but a symbol of strength in order to meet our different goals, one of which is to be the first and the best.
