The University of Ibadan delivered an impressive performance at the 2024 Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) chess competition, securing a total of seven medals, including 2 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze across both team and individual events.
In the men’s team event, UI’s delegation claimed the silver medal, while the women’s team also put up a commendable fight in a highly competitive pool, ultimately placing sixth overall.
Men’s Individual Performances
UI’s male players delivered strong individual displays across multiple boards. At Board 3, Akporherhe Blessing emerged as one of the university’s brightest stars, capturing gold through a series of commanding performances marked by tactical depth and composure. On Board 4, Oludoyi Oluwatoyin added to the medal haul with a well-earned silver, demonstrating consistency and resilience throughout the rounds. Meanwhile, Oguntona Abraham brought home another silver from Board 6, showcasing strategic discipline and contributing significantly to the overall success of the men’s team.

Women’s Individual Performances
The women’s contingent also put forward notable efforts. On Board 3, Osuntoki Favour delivered an impressive run that secured a silver medal, reflecting her steady form and competitive spirit. At Board 5, Ojo Abimbola fought through a tough field to earn bronze, giving the team an important podium finish. Rounding off the strong individual performances was Esoimeme Eboselu, who claimed gold on Board 6 after a series of confident displays that underscored her rising status in university chess.

With 2 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze, the University of Ibadan emerged 6th out of 58 participating institutions with 36 medals, including 9 gold, 13 silver, and 14 bronze.
The UI chess team is expected to build on this momentum as preparations begin for future national and inter-university tournaments.
