The University of Ibadan Students’ Union on the eve of the 15th of May, 2025, sent out a memo to the Students’ Representative Council on the suspension of the planned congress.
The memo, titled “Urgent Request for the Suspension of the Planned Students’ Union Congress”, stated reasons for the suspension of the congress that was supposed to hold on the 17th of May, 2025.
In the memo, the SU sought a formal suspension of the planned Students’ Union Congress by the SRC.
It cited the assault on officials of the Union and an altercation in front of Mellanby hall as reasons for this suspension.
“Recent concerning events have created a perceived threat to the safety and integrity of the planned Congress.” The memo read.
It went further to identify the culprits responsible for the alleged assault on its officials as Nice Linus, Honourable Segun from Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and Hon. Shalom of the Queen Elizabeth II Hall.
The memo identified them as some of the culprits along with some others that could not be identified.
“Regrettably, some members of the student body and even the Students’ Representative Council namely Nice Linus, Hon. Segun, Hon. Shalom, and others we could not recognize engaged in acts of harassment and obstruction towards the Union Leadership.”
It further related news of an altercation that occurred between Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and Mellanby Hall, following the Freshers’ Match between both halls.
“…a violent altercation erupted in front of Mellanby Hall involving residents of both halls. This resulted in the regrettable damage of some properties and highlighted the heightened tension and potential for further unrest within the student body.”
The memo further stated that proceeding under the current circumstances would be unwise.
“We believe that proceeding under the current circumstances would be unwise and could potentially jeopardize the well-being of our members and the integrity of the Congress.”
It should however be noted that this memo was only sent out after the members of the executive council had unilaterally announced through a letterhead that the Congress was suspended.
