NEWS: UCJ UI Holds Global Journalism Summit, Inducts 160 New Members

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI), on Saturday, November 30, 2024, hosted a Global Campus Journalism Summit together with it 36th Induction ceremony.

The event, which was held at the KAAF Auditorium in the Department of Human Nutrition saw the Union induct 160 new members. The summit brought together campus journalists from various universities in the country and top media professionals to discuss the challenges, opportunities and the future of journalism in Nigeria.

In her address, the UCJ UI President, Miss Tosanwunmi Elizabeth Tarre, noted that the summit was necessary to discuss the changing landscape of campus journalism practice as well as strengthen the relationship that exists amongst campus journalism outlets in various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

“The conversations at the summit were necessary to stir up positive changes and it is my hope that those in attendance put into action what was learned,” she said.

Mrs. Oluwabunmi Kolawole Ishola, an alumnus of UCJ UI , delivered a lecture titled “Balancing Journalism with Academia.” she advised the inductees to manage their time wisely so that their journalism work does not affect their studies. Another lecture, prepared by Mrs. Moturayo Alaka, was delivered on her behalf by Miss Tarre.

After taking an oath of allegiance, awards were given to outstanding inductees. Adeyemo Mercy of the Law Press won the Sunday Oguntola Essay Competition, while Jesutomiwo Adebumowa was recognized as the Most Energetic Inductee.

The summit featured two panel sessions that examines strategies for young journalists to thrive in today’s media environment. Also, the Union launched another edition of the ‘campulse magazine’ which explored the theme: Journalism in the Age of AI: Balancing Innovation and Integrity.
