JUST IN: UItes Give SU Executives ‘5-hours’ to Correct Alleged Congress Resolution Errors

Two students of the University of Ibadan, Aduwo Ayodele and Nice Linus, have filed a petition against the leadership of the Students’ Union, accusing them of disrespect, misconduct, and the falsification of congress resolutions.

The petition, dated August 21, 2024, was addressed to the Students’ Union Executive Council and the Student Representative Council.

These students’ grievances stemmed from the weekend’s Congress where they claimed the Union President, Aweda Bolaji, walked out of the session without formally adjourning. The petition describes this action as a “gross disrespect of the congress, being the apex organ of the Students’ Union”

According to the petition, the resolutions that were supposedly agreed upon include:

  1. The University Management should issue a memo within three working days to halt departments and faculties from requesting school fee receipts.
  2. The school fee payment portal should be suspended.
  3. The Students’ Union Executive Council should release a memo detailing these demands or face calls for their resignation.

In Contrary, the petitioners argued that the resolution released by the Students Union did not accurately capture the resolution which the President acknowledged, following the Congress.

“Sad to discover, the resolution released by the Students’ Union did not capture the Congress resolutions, which the President acknowledged and publicly read out before abruptly leaving the congress,” the petition read in part.

The students have now demanded that the Executive Council correct the alleged errors within five hours of receiving the petition. The petitioner asserted that, “We make this conscious demand with the expectation that the leadership of the Students’ Union will respect the consensus decision of the Congress.”

The petition was also copied to several key university bodies and national organizations, including the Dean of Students Affairs, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), amongst others.
