The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) has sent an open letter to the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde on Thursday 13th January, 2022.

In the letter, the Union called the attention of the Governor to the state of insecurity and the frequent accidents at Agbowo and the University of Ibadan environment.

The release followed the incessant robbery attacks in Agbowo and also the frequent accidents at the UI-Agbowo Road which has claimed the lives of many students of the university and has led to numerous complaints from parents and guardians of students who have fallen victims to these sad incidents.

The union further expressed its dissatisfaction at the levity with which the Governor is handling the matter. According to the release by the union, this frivolity has shown in the persistent attacks despite a series of letters that have been addressed to the governor.

“While letters have been sent to your office to address these security concerns, we however find it upsetting that the situation has been treated lightly, and the lack of security has persisted,” the letter reads in part.

The Union further stated that UITES can no longer rely on the state’s Chief Security Officer for the protection of lives and properties due to his incompetence, outdated, and inadequate techniques for maintaining effective security in Oyo stated.

The Union also pointed out the state of the UI-Ojoo road and how the governor has not seen a compelling motive to act despite being aware of the state of the road whenever they use the road.

Furthermore, The Union implored the governor to table a public apology to the victims of these incidents, call an emergency meeting with security agencies in the state to bring about a positive outcome on the issue of insecurity, and lastly, he should install traffic lights, speed breakers and traffic officials at the places mentioned.

The union threatened to stage a protest if the Governor does not solve the highlighted issues.
