The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJUI), on Saturday, awarded some members of the union for their outstanding performances in campus journalism.
The campus journalists were awarded at the union’s dinner party/handover ceremony which held on Saturday October 23 at the Abdulsalam Abubakar Post graduate hall.
The ceremony which marked the end of the union’s 33rd administration, was filled with many activities including presentation of awards to the nominated campus journalists and Local Press Organisations (LPOs).
Outstanding campus journalists were acknowledged for their dedication to the practice of journalism on campus, as well their selfless contributions to the union.
The celebrated campus journalists included; Theophilus Alawonde, Olawale Olaogun, Raji Olatunji, Damilare Ajiboye, Abdulrahman Adebayo, among others.
Alawonde, who is the Editor-in-Chief of Independence hall Press Organisation, won awards in multiple categories, including Best Editor-in-Chief, and Overall best campus journalist. His LPO also won the Best Hall LPO and Overall Best LPO.
Olaogun was awarded as the Best Investigative Journalist, while Olatunji and Ajiboye were awarded as the Most Energetic, and the Most Supportive Campus Journalists respectively.
Abdulrahman Adebayo who also got double awards won Best Features Writer and Most Promising Campus Journalist.
Other awardees were: Ibikunle Elijah, Best News Writer; Akinmoyeje Precious, Best Political Writer; Favour Oyebamiji, Best Health Writer; Emmanuel Oyelami, Best Creative Writer; Ajise Israel, Best Sports Writer and Williams Owoeye, Best Satirical Writer.
AFAS Press also emerged as the Best Faculty Press Organisation, while Rockite Press of the Geology department was awarded Best Departmental Press Organisation.
Outstanding female journalists were also recognised with Hikamh Tiamiyu winning the award,J6 –award for the Best Female Campus Journalist. The two other nominees for the award–Tolu Ayeye and Olu-Ojegbeje– were presented with certificates of nomination.
Awards were also presented to winners The ICIR Investigative/Data Journalism contest, which was open to all campus journalists across the country.
The winners were Abiodun Jamiu from Uthman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS); Muhammad Ibrahim from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; and Abdulrasheed Hammad, also from UDUS.
