Tedder, Indy, Zik, Others Emerge As Winners In First Leg Of Jaw War’21

Lord Tedder, Independence, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Queen Elizabeth, and Ransome Kuti halls have emerged as the winners in the first round of the 2021 edition of the Jaw War debate competition.

The first round of the competition which was among halls took place on Wednesday, September 29 at the New Faculty Lecture Theatre (NFLT) of Faculty of Science.

The halls of residence that opened the floor were Lord Tedder hall and Kenneth Mellanby hall, debating on the topic: Can Virtual Classes Effectively Replace Traditional Classes? The speakers from Lord Tedder Hall, Sultan Habiblah and Olayiide Bolaji, supported the topic, while the speakers from Kenneth Mellanby, Efe Khaese Desmond and Adejare David, argued otherwise.

The next halls that debated were Alexander Brown Hall and Independence Hall on the topic: Should Single Use Plastics be Banned in Nigeria? The speakers from Alexander Brown Hall, Mark Obeya and David Salami, supported while the speakers from Independence Hall, Omotayo Adenugba and Erimola John, opposed.

Sultan Bello Hall and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall debated on Stan Culture: A Healthy Support System or A Toxic Following?  With Fabarebo Victor and Barnabas Michael from Sultan Bello Hall arguing against the topic, while Ebenezer Bodunde and Omotayo Ajibola from Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall argued for the topic.

Speakers from Queen Idia Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall spoke on the topic: Is the privatisation of planned cities-eko Atlantic, a bad idea? The speakers from Queen Idia Hall, Eguaoje Joy and Eribo Amifel, opposed the topic, while the speakers from Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oluwatobi Eniola and Joy Uvureh, supported.

The last round of speakers at the event were speakers from Obafemi Awolowo Hall, Aisha Yusuf and Georgena Reuben, who spoke for the topic: Should Nigerians in Diaspora be allowed to vote? and opposing speakers from Ransome Kuti Hall, Ayo Salako and Goodness Okusanya.

At the end, Lord Tedder Hall won having 87 points, while their opponent, Kenneth Mellanby, had 81 points. Independence Hall won scoring 85 points while Alexander Brown Hall had 81 points. Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall won having 88 points while Sultan Bello Hall had 87 point. Queen Elizabeth Hall won scoring 84 points, while their opponent, Queen Idia Hall, had 81 points. Ransome Kuti hall scored 95 points, while their opponent, Obafemi Awolowo hall, had 91 points.
