In a career development webinar that was hosted by Women in Engineering, University of Ibadan Student Branch (WIE-UISB) on August 13, Mary Godservant, a UI graduate of Industrial and Production Engineering, talked about her success in her career journey in tech.

In the webinar titled: My Career Journey in Tech, the UI/UX designer shared her experiences as a beginner in UI/UX designing up to the present point of her career as a User experience designer at Diwala.

She explained that some of the things that helped her immensely was volunteering and acquiring skills outside the classroom.

“You have to go out of your way to acquire skills that are outside the classroom and also, meet people and attend events,” she said.

She further stated that this helped her a lot as she learnt many things from the events she attended and she was able to meet better skilled people who exposed her to some of the things that she did not know and it improved her experience.

The 2021 Microsoft Techster Fellow talked about the importance of volunteering.

“One thing that helped me was not really from UI/UX skill, but from the soft and hard skills that I got from volunteering.”

Besides this, she shared some beneficial tips which she calls ‘Recipe That Has Worked for Me So Far’ for any student who is aspiring to venture into or has newly chosen any career path.

She stated in her tips that students should start from somewhere and anywhere when choosing a career path, develop a growth mindset, get friends and mentors that will aid their journey, seize opportunities as they come, and finally, money should not be their first priority.

Mary Godservant, during her undergraduate days in the University of Ibadan, volunteered for many organizations using her design skills. She was also the design lead at WIE-UISB, Women Techmakers, Ibadan, and She Code Africa core team.
