The Tax Club, University of Ibadan, has secured the first runner-up position at Tax Engage 2026, held at Aderemi Makanjuola Hall, Lagos State University (LASU), on Monday, 21 April 2026.
The competition, organised by the Tax Club of Lagos State University, brought together students from the University of Ibadan (UI), Lagos State University (LASU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), and Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU).
Participation followed a competitive selection process that began with essay submissions across participating institutions. Although the total number of applicants was not disclosed, five institutions were shortlisted to advance to the presentation stage following preliminary screening.
The shortlisted teams proceeded to a structured presentation and defence phase, where participants were required to defend submitted essays through PowerPoint presentations. All presentations addressed a unified topic: “From Enforcement to Engagement: Nigeria’s Shift Towards Voluntary Tax Compliance in the Global Context.”
Representing the University of Ibadan were Inioluwa Oreoluwa Wale-Adeyemi, a 300-level student of Arts and Social Science Education, and Chika Divine Akachukwu, a 400-level Law student, under the Tax Club UI delegation.
At the conclusion of the competition, Obafemi Awolowo University emerged as the overall winner, while the University of Ibadan placed first runner-up. Ahmadu Bello University secured the second runner-up position.
Speaking on the experience, Inioluwa described the competition as impactful, noting that the preparation process strengthened teamwork, communication, and self-awareness. She also highlighted the value of engaging with students from other institutions, stating that it broadened her perspective and contributed to personal development.
“Beyond the opportunity to present, the entire period of preparation taught me the value of collaboration,” she said.
Chika described representing the University of Ibadan as an honour, noting that the experience required preparation and deliberate engagement. According to her, the competition reinforced her understanding of representation as more than a title, but as a reflection of excellence, integrity, and leadership.
