“Our Generation is an Endangered Generation”- Wole Soyinka

wolesWorld celebrated noble laureate, Professor Wole, who turned 80 on July 13, 2014. He was born in Abeokuta, Ogun state on July 13, 1934.

The university also celebrated his 80th birthday on Wednesday 12 November, 2014. As part of the celebration, the Abadina Media Resource organised a programme “Children Reading Campaign with Wole Soyinka” which held at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan. Also “An Evening of Reminiscences with Wole Soyinka” which was to be held at Arts Theatre but was held at Trenchard Hall due to certain inconveniences.

During his outreach with the children which took longer than the scheduled time because he was so much interested with the inquisitiveness of the children. One of them asked him a question which he was really happy about, the girl asked “if in the 80’s he said his generation was a wasted generation, what then will he say about the current generation?”.

He was so happy to reply this particular question, according to him, “our generation is an endangered generation” he said the leaders of those time were scared and were not ready to change from the parochial behavior that was in place then, but our generation is an endangered one because now we lack resourceful people and the leaders have eaten deep into the food of corruption set on their table.

An evening of Reminiscences later took place at Trenchard Hall university of Ibadan later in the evening of the same day. On Sunday, November 16, 2014 a stage play of one of his novels “Alapata Apata” was performed in the Arts Theatre University of Ibadan in honour of this great man.
