The Students’ Union of the University of Ibadan has issued an update regarding the ongoing process for approving cooking gas usage in undergraduate halls of residence, following discussions with the University Management earlier in May.
In a statement released on May 28, 2026 and jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Temidayo S. Adeboye and the General Secretary, Joshua O. Shontan, the Union acknowledged concerns raised by students over delays beyond the initially communicated two-week timeline for implementation.
The Union noted that while the expected timeframe has elapsed, progress has continued behind the scenes through administrative procedures described as necessary to ensure safety and long-term sustainability of the policy.
According to the statement, the period of limited communication from the Union was due to what it described as “intensive, ongoing negotiations” aimed at ensuring proper implementation of the project.
As part of recent developments, the Union disclosed that a final inspection of all undergraduate hostels was conducted on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The exercise, it explained, was carried out by the Union leadership to assess facility readiness and align findings with reports from the Student Affairs Office.
The statement further revealed that the project has now reached the final stage of approval. The Union added that engagements with relevant authorities are ongoing, with efforts focused on securing the release of a final, binding memorandum that will formally authorise implementation.
While no specific commencement date was announced, the Union expressed optimism that the process is now in its concluding phase, describing the rollout as “closer than ever” and assuring students that implementation would be swift once approval is granted.
The Union reaffirmed its commitment to the initiative, thanking students for their patience and continued understanding throughout the process.
