Students on Wednesday staged a protest over worsening campus conditions, including prolonged electricity outages and water scarcity linked to the ongoing strike by non-academic staff unions.
The protest, which began in the early hours of the day, started with a small group of students from Independence and Nnamdi Azikiwe halls of residence before swelling in number and spreading across the campus.
First reported by IndyPress, the demonstration gained momentum as students mobilised across lecture venues, growing from a handful of protesters into a crowd large enough to fill a lecture theatre by about 9:00 a.m.
The students were seen chanting slogans such as “No water, no class” and “No light, no class,” as they moved through different parts of the university.
Findings showed that the protest extended to lecture theatres within the Faculty of Science, disrupting academic activities. It later spread to the Faculties of Computing and Social Sciences, before reaching the Faculty of Arts, where activities were also grounded and students were urged to join the demonstration.
The protest is connected to the ongoing industrial action by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, which has disrupted electricity, water supply, and other essential services on campus.
As of the time of filing this report, the situation remained tense, with further developments expected.
