A total of 16 professors are vying for the seat of the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan which will last for a single tenure of five years, according to a report by The Nations Newspaper.
Several reports were released in 2020 concerning the process of electing a new vice chancellor for the institution.
Due to the inability to resolve the crises surrounding the appointment of a new VC, Professor Babatunde Ekanola of the department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts was appointed as the acting VC in November, 2020.
The tenure which was to last for the period of six months was however extended in June for another six months due to the inability to resolve the crises.
The process of appointing the new VC commenced afresh after the meeting of the University Council which was presided over by the chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
Community Organises Town Hall Meeting For VC Contenders
The UI Community Forum, which consists of five unions – Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Students Union (SU), Non-Academic Staff of University (NASU) and the Non-Academic Technicians (NATS), has organized an event where the 16 contestants will present their agenda to the University Community.
The forum which will take place on zoom is tagged: “The Voice of the Next UI VC, Who is Next?” and it will hold on the 4th of October, 2021.
The town hall meeting will serve as a platform for staff, students and other members of the university community to meet the aspirants, listen to them and ask them questions.
Others in the race alongside Professor Babatunde Ekanola include Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science; Professor Aderemi Raji-Oyelade of the Department of English, Faculty of Arts; Professor Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto of the Department of Sociology; Professor Emiola Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa of the College of Medicine; Professor Temitope Alonge of the University College Hospital (UCH).
Professor George Olusegun Ademowo of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutic, Faculty of Basic Medical Science; Professor Kolawole Clement Olusegun Olaniran, Department of Teacher Education; Professor Ganiyu Adesola Aderounmu, Professor Ebenezer Farombi of Biochemistry, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Faweyinmi of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Rasaq Olatunde Kalilu of the department of Fine and Applied Arts, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Professor Anthony Kolawole, Professor Oladele Layiwola of the Institute of African Studies; Professor Nazeem Oluwafemi Mimiko of the department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Babatunde Salako.
