While awarding outstanding Faculty of Science students in academics, leadership management and community service on Monday at the Lake Side Lecture Theatre, the Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Abiodun Ayodele said the awardees (students) should build strong character to complement their academic excellence.
He said the Dean’s Roll of Honour Awards which is used to appreciate students who are doing exploit in the fields of academics, leadership and community service, is a way of motivating them (students) to excel more.
He stated: “Leaders of tomorrow should be recognized so others would know that there is reward for hardwork.”
The Dean of Students, Professor Keye Abiona, who was present at the occasion, also encouraged this initiative. He said it is noteworthy “whereby we have a faculty appreciating the students for academic excellence, appreciating the students for community service.”
He also advised the awardees to “keep the spirit” and ensure they become good ambassadors of the University. “When you do more, the sky is the beginning,” he said.
The awards of academic excellence were presented to “First Class” students across departments in the Faculty for 2018/2019 academic session, with ninety-two students bagging the awards.
Also, the leadership management awards were presented to students who have demonstrated excellent leadership qualities, while those of the community service were given to students who have contributed—selflessly—in way or the other—to growth and development of their communities.
Speaking further with our correspondents, Professor Abiodun said the ‘award’ was conceived not to only encourage students who are doing excellently but to also build the confidence that when they (students) do better, they would always be recognized and appreciated.
“We will continue to encourage them (students) through their departments. If there are ways by which the department can assist them, the faculty is always ready to complement whatever they (department) plan,” he stated.
He, however, promised that the recognition of students would be continuous as every successive Dean would not stop the “legacy.”
He further advised the students to brace themselves up, harping that they should remain focused on their studies especially the students who also wish to be appreciated.
“Once you are diligent, the sky is the beginning. The most important thing is to be diligent. This may not make meaning to anybody now, but it does. My appeal to every student is to continue to work hard and trust God for success in life,” he said.
