Non-academic staff members of the University of Ibadan under the aegis of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) on Wednesday commenced a 3-day warning strike.

According to a statement released by the union, it warned that its members would embark on an indefinite strike, should the federal government refuse to accede to its demands by Friday, November 12.

It was further stated in the statement that an indefinite strike will see workers entirely withdraw their services from critical departments like Jaja clinic, teaching and research, farm, zoological garden among others.

Findings by UCJUI revealed that JaJa clinic has been shut since the warning strike commenced on Wednesday and this poses a serious danger to emergency medical services within the Institution, because JaJa remains the primary medical center for students.

Following the closure of the clinic, students within the Institution have begun to express fears over the risks it poses to the medical wellbeing of students, especially as examination would commence next week Monday.

Speaking with UCJUI a student of the Faculty of Agriculture, who pleaded annonimity, explained that there is an urgent need for the strike to be called off .

“Why should Nasu strike affect the JaJa clinic? We are in the middle of exams and anything can happen” she lamented.

“When there is a dispute, it should be resolved, it is my prayer that the Federal Government and all those in charge of the educational sector will listen to the demands of NASU.

“Their request should be addressed and they should resolve it so that the JaJa clinic and all affected places will be reopen for full activities, ” she added.
