It is known throughout the four corners of this university, that the most prestigious and homely female hostel, the Queen Idia hall has embarked on a multi-international recreation and reconstruction of the hall. This project work has started from the administration of Heritage. During her administration, the new porters’ lodge was constructed to add to the old one against the popular believe that it would replace it. Also, she in hand with the Hall Warden and Idia management had set up the Idia love garden within the hostel. This garden has up still today served so many purposes such as: the best view for photo shot, fellowships prayer ground, lovers’ joint and group reading and discussion.
This semester, the management alongside the Ini administration has been seen to continue in that line: ‘a journey through continuity.’ The hall is at present on its way to what the university management would call a ‘multi-international’ hostel standard. The hall as of the last semester before the exams had been able to achieve the following, placement of bulb in strategic places around the hall, the repairs of some window nets and doors and florescent and socket repairs.
During the exam period, a lot of eyes glittered against the female hall of residence on it repainting project. Many people have been heard asking various questions such as: is Idia the only hostel in this school? Why are they spending the entire school’s money to beautify their hall? At present, the management has not only been painting the exterior parts of the building. Some rooms in A-block are also under refurnishing. This act has been applauded by many to be one of the best any hostel management can do within this citadel of learning.
Also, the management has shown a great deal of concern and care to occupants of the hall as revealed in the immediate action taken to see to the most recent fire outbreak within the hall. While the hall of residence has been under reconstruction and electrification, the room 61 in B-block had a fire explosion due to the presence of some naked wires and bad connection system among the room, kitchen and toilets. The fire outbreak had caused the window net to be burned while the lights were disconnected from the rest. The net was immediately repaired while the fluorescents were repaired about two days later.
The kitchens have also not been left alone to lay fallow. All the kitchens now wear a new face. They have also been painted while the damaged sinks have been effectively repaired. This has added to the taste and look of the hostel.
The lobby, staircases and railings has also been painted to suit the taste of both the management and the occupants of the hall of residence.
The repaired fluorescents and the newly placed ones have been found to be durable enough at least for the moment.
Despite all the transformation going on within the Idia hall of residence, the hall still lies in the waste of the past. Let us take a look at the different parts of the hostels…
THE LEFT ASIDE C-BLOCK AND FLATS
The Idia hall of residence is a hall which comprises of three blocks. While a lot of refurnishing has
been on-going in the hall, the newest block-C block as well as flats has been left aside from this process. The case of C-block is getting worst day in day out. Let us take a look at this picture. This is one of the bathrooms on C-block; second floor to be precise. This bathroom smells like a mortuary and has the worst and horrible sight one can ever ask for. The doors are bad, the water is filled with stagnant water while the water outlet is block and smells terribly.
Also the kitchens and lobbies lie in its tale of yester night. The physical appearance and untouched characteristics puts them off from the other blocks.
The flats is also known to have water running through it taps. It is most times to aid the stress of them fetching water from the well. But this water smells terribly and cannot be used to bathe at all. The hall management is yet to look into this issue.
THE DIRT-FILLED SINKS AND WATER-FILLED KITCHENS
Though attractive on the outside, the management has not been able to effectively see to the dirt
that has filled kitchens. Almost all the kitchen sinks are filled with both rice and spaghetti waste or beans peel. In this picture, despite the fact that the sink as being block, some students still poured water into the sink and left it without offering any solution to it. Many cleaners feeling irritated by this unspeakable acts by ‘ladies’ many times refuse to clean up the kitchens in the morning.
Also, some kitchen sinks are yet to be repaired. This has made some students to result to washing their plates at the taps sides which would of course led to the payment of fines if caught.
We can all recall that in the last edition of the case study of Idia was tagged with this quote: ‘The value of education depends on the time and worth placed on it.’ This week, as a follow-up case study, we will look into this:
The usage and maintenance of an established master-class house: who is responsible?

The management has done their best to a very large extent even if not all. This has led to a high rate in the living condition of living of students. Despite all this, many of the things repaired have gone back to the old state. Who should be blamed for this: the students or the management?
THE STUDENTS
One would wonder whether the management are the ones who make use of these kitchens but the students themselves. Why would the students whom all these reconstruction is being made for decide to continue in the realm of their past. Many of this sinks has been blocked with wastes of food, stagnant water and dirt.
What would cause the occupants to keep the halls of residence clean? These sinks are not being blocked by the management neither are the toilets and bathrooms misused by them. The students are the ones who make use of these facilities and decide on the ways and methods they wish to make use of them.
The C-block ground floor still sinks of dirty water pouring down from their balcony. While the A-block occupants has refrained from pouring down water from their balcony probably for the fear of being caught and fined or they wish to enjoy the period of neatness. How much of this can they withhold before they begin their previous acts? Did the managements pour the water there for them? Every man should stand responsible for his or her action.
THE MANAGEMENT
It is no doubt that most of the projects executed by the hall management may not stand the test of time. The paints would fade, the fluorescents would spoil, the wiring would spark and the water outlet would get blocked. This is why they are expected to look beyond the present benefits of their plans and actions.
Their project should move beyond the present which would remain forever as their legacies. Materials of high qualities should be made use of to guarantee their durability.
Also, extra efforts should be made to ensure that occupants of the hall of residence maximise the infrastructure made available for them. This should of course not lead to students bullying and unnecessary rules.
IN CONCLUSION
Both parties have their roles to play in ensuring a long lasting project. This should be done without any of the parties affected by the other’s acts. Also the projects on-going within the Idia hall of residence has been great but there should be a form of unity in act. No part of the hall should be given more attention to than the other as every student paid the same amount.
