On February 2, 2017, The Association of Benue State Students, University of Ibadan chapter, had a solemn procession (in the latter part of the day) to commemorate and express their solidarity with the people of Benue state, who have been experiencing horrific and near-genocidal attack orchestrated by the Fulani Herdsmen.
The procession was led by the president of the association, Mr Tokura Daniel, who explained why the procession was being staged.
“We act in solidarity with the people at home, though we are not at home but want to let our people know that we are in this struggle together, that we are against the killings and open grazing in Benue state” he explained.
While providing a solution to the farmer-herdsmen incessant rift in Benue state, Mr Daniel said the Federal Government should make use of a civilized method of herding such as ranching practiced by countries like Mexico.
Also, he applauded the action of the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who has been calling the Federal Government to send in security operatives to checkmate the attackers; thus, making peace reign in the state.
It is pertinent to note that the Fulani menace in Nigeria has been for a very long time, and a problem inherited by the present administration of President Buhari. However, the killing has been more rampant in Benue state with cases of clashes reported on a frequent basis.
The president, Mr. Tokura Daniel had requested that Union of Campus Journalists cover the highly commendable ‘event’ in a series of phone calls to the Vice President Editorial, UCJ UI (Martins Isaac).
