The night before 9th of February 2017, there was a theft case in Nnamdi Azikwe Hall (Zik Hall) and Independent Hall (Indi Hall) of University of Ibadan. In the event of that theft we gathered that almost all the shops in Zik Hall were burgled just as in Indi hall.

Before now, the school authority had given a notification that all undergraduate students should vacate the hall.

The only halls where undergraduate students could be legally are Mellanby Hall for boys and Queens Hall for girls after the payment of 1,200 naira for two weeks.

With this notification, a lot of guys went to Mellanby while some still made ways through unethical means to gain access into the halls, especially Zik, Indi and Kuti.

From the conversation of students, stalls in Indi Hall were more devastated than that of Zik.

Information has reached us that as at today, 9th of February 2017, “Abefele” the university security unit came to raid the halls for those miscreants who access the hall through other means.

We equally learnt that Students who filled their names in the porter’s register so that they could pass the main gate to get out of the hall this morning are in trouble as they are the foremost suspects.

While there are insinuations that those thieves were students, others expressed that the theft might have been successful with the aids of students. Amidst these random submissions, UCJ UI is yet to get further tangible reports on the event.

When contacted, the chairman-elect of the hall Mr Opaleye Akintunde confirmed that the theft happened. In his words, “it was very bad.” He mentioned that only about two shops were not burgled. He also said that this incident has caused distrust among the portals and the hall executive-elect that the latter are not allowed to enter into the hall. In his concluding note he said that the porters on duty are to take responsibility for the losses.

UCJ UI also contacted one of the persons whose shop was burgled. Miss Anu, one of the victims confirmed the theft to UCJ UI. She answered that she had visited the place and lamented that her stall was completely looted.
