Balancing Books and Brand Deals: The Rise of Student Influencers

By: Oladele Robiat

In today’s fast-paced digital era, the divide between academia and social media is becoming increasingly blurred. Once upon a time, university life was exclusively about hitting the books, attending lectures, and living for the occasional weekend hangout. Now, for some students, it also means navigating the world of social media, cultivating personal brands, and dealing with the ups and downs of online fame.

Meet Badmusi Adeola Christianah, a 400-level student, who has carved a space for herself in the digital landscape while balancing the rigorous demands of university life. With a rapidly growing following of over 130,000 followers on TikTok. Christianah seems to have seamlessly blended her academic pursuits with the world of content creation.

Christianah first stepped into the world of content creation during her first year at the University of Ibadan. What started as an innocent hobby, sharing snippets of her hostel life and experiences as a student, soon transformed into something much larger.

“I started content creation in 100 level, second semester, although I didn’t take it seriously until I got to 200 level,” she said.

The videos she created resonated with many students who found themselves in similar situations, and her content was usually shared, liked, and commented on by a wide audience.

This initial burst of success made her realise that her content had the potential to reach a broader audience. She started producing content more consistently, showing not just the academic side of her life but also her personal interests, such as her favourite study routines, campus events, and even her hobbies outside of class. Each post was met with engagement from the student body and beyond, increasing her follower count exponentially.

Beyond the Glamour

While social media success might seem like an easy ride, the reality is far more complex. For a student influencer like Christianah, balancing the demands of her degree with the pressures of content creation is no small feat, as she is no stranger to sleepless nights, trying to finish assignments while simultaneously planning their next social media post. Maintaining this delicate balance has proven to be a constant challenge.

According to Christianah, the key to juggling both academics and content creation is time management.

“Time management and setting my priorities right is a way I have been balancing my academic life and also engaging my followers.”

She tries to allocate specific hours during the day for content creation, whether it’s recording videos, editing, or engaging with followers, and ensures that she doesn’t neglect her academic responsibilities. Moreover, Christianah has developed a habit of working in batches.

“I dedicate my weekends to creating content in bulk, while the weekdays are for my academics.” This allows her to remain consistent on social media while keeping her academic performance intact.

In an age where the majority of influencers curate their lives to portray perfection, Christianah has built a reputation for being refreshingly authentic. They understand that students want to see real, unfiltered aspects of university life – the highs and the lows – not just the perfectly posed photos of a carefree lifestyle.

Christianah’s content is marked by vulnerability and honesty. Whether it’s discussing issues related to hostel life, academic pressure and so on, Christianah earned the trust and admiration of their followers by speaking openly about the realities of student life. This authenticity is one of the main reasons they’ve been able to grow a loyal following that sees them not just as a content creator but as a trusted figure in the student community.

What began as a simple pastime, which was a way of relieving her of school stress, became an avenue for potential income. As Christianah’s social media presence grew, she began receiving offers from brands to collaborate and promote products to their student audience. These brand deals provided a financial incentive that many student influencers often rely on to support their academic pursuits and help them maintain their content creation.

Collaborating with brands has also provided Christianah with opportunities to build professional connections that can extend beyond their time at university. From promoting local businesses to partnering with major companies targeting student demographics, their collaborations have allowed them to refine their marketing skills and gain valuable insights into the business side of social media.

In a world where students are expected to excel academically, engage in extracurricular activities, and build careers, social media provides a powerful tool for self-expression and personal branding. Mizita and Christianah have harnessed the power of social media to create a platform that not only benefits them but also helps them connect with their peers and impact their campus community.

Change Heralded by Digitisation

In a digital world where the pressures of perfection are often overwhelming, Mizita and Christianah remind us that authenticity is the key to building meaningful connections. Through their journey, they’ve demonstrated that it is possible to balance academic success with social media influence, proving that students today are not only preparing for their careers in traditional ways but also through new, innovative, and digital channels.

Whether it’s brand deals, campus advocacy, or digital marketing opportunities, they are becoming examples of the power of social media in shaping the future of education, influence, and career success. As we continue to witness the growth of the digital age, it’s clear that the role of campus influencers will only continue to evolve and expand, making them integral players in the university experience of the future.

Despite their growing visibility and perceived popularity, campus influencers often face immense, underappreciated challenges that come with their roles. Behind every curated post or viral content lies the pressure to remain consistently creative, relevant, and engaged all while navigating the demands of academic life. The expectation to deliver content regularly can lead to burnout, especially when coupled with tight schedules, limited resources, and mental fatigue. Many influencers also wrestle with self-doubt, fear of online criticism, and the emotional toll of constantly being in the spotlight. Christanah stated“i have gotten hate comments, but I don’t let them get to me.” These behind-the-scenes struggles reveal that influencing on campus is far from easy; it’s a demanding role that requires resilience, time management, and emotional strength.
