The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode egbetokun has announced substantial upgrades to the police intelligence unit, now elevated to departmental status.
The IGP made this announcement on Monday at the personality lecture organized by the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies on ‘The Nigeria Police Force and the Management of Internal Security’ at the University of Ibadan.
“Our intelligence unit have obtained a status of department and [now] headed by the Deputy inspector general of police. Also, we have upgraded the intelligence unit in all state command, they are now headed by Assistant commissioners of police.”
“This is because we believe in Intelligence-Led policing. The modern policing is not community based but it is intelligence led and technology driven,” the IGP said.
The IGP also disclosed that the NPF have over the years developed capability to respond to various forms of insecurity in the country.
“Recently, we established the Cybercrime unit. In fact, we have one of the best Cybercrime unit in Africa”
“Our Cybercrime unit have been positioned well engaging in successful operations. The unit has successfully collaborated with international law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, Japan National Police, South Korea Police, and INTERPOLL,” he added.
The TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies of the University of Ibadan was established to bridge the gap between academia and practical reality, and to also provide a platform for robust discussions and the exchange of ideas on improving the security landscape in the country.
Other important dignitaries at the personality lecture are Prof. K. O. Adebowale, mni, as Chief Host; Dr. Benjamin Aluko, Fspsp, as host; Prof. Babajide Owoeye, Fspsp, as Special Guest of Honour; and Prof. Adigun Agbaje, Fspsp, as Chairman of the event.
