RecycleEdge Organizes Educates Stakeholders on the Impotance of Recycling

As part of efforts to emphasize the dangers of plastic pollution, RecycleEdge has organised a sustainability hangout to educate stakeholders.

The hangout with the theme ‘Plastic Cleanse: Renew, Recycle, Revive’ was held on the 30th of August at the Eco-Friendly Centre, University of Ibadan under the Green Campus Project an initiative sponsored by CocaCola and Sweep.

The program kicked off at 12:35PM and the guest speaker, Mr. Mayokun Iyaomolere, the founder of Ploggin Nigeria, educated the attendees on just how much plastic they consumed in a year and the effect the plastic had on the environment. He also spoke about the need for academic research in plastic and environmental fields.

A panel that comprised of the Student Union President Samuel Samson Tobiloba, the Director of the Youth Friendly and Eco Friendly Centre, Dr. Akinyemi Olukemi and a representative of the AID NG, a non-governmental organisation founded as a Millennium project in 2021, Anowa-Duke Ikechukwu. During the panel session, the President announced plans lined up by the Union ahead of the World Clean Up Day on September 16.

He also revealed that there are plans in place to organise a competition between the halls of residence as part of efforts to combat one of the biggest problems on campus which is waste management.

“People must change. We must change our attitude towards things.” Dr Akinyemi said, referring to the culture of waste disposal in the country. “This is why events like this are invaluable. The change must start from somewhere. Recycledge started from somewhere. We can’t always wait for the government. We too must be agents of change.”

In the same vein, the Vice President of the Union, Ogunsesan Nafisat, spoke on the importance of training students on recycling and upcyling to motivate and empower students to do more with the plastics they have.
