TEDDER HALL CHAIRMAN SUSPENDED

By; Babafemi, FALAYI

The Tedder Hall Representative Council during the early hours of Saturday, 18th of October, 2014 summarily suspended the Tedder Hall Chairman, Adebayo Damilola, indefinitely on grounds that were not made public. The Hall vice Chairman, Orji PaulinusKelechi has been mandated to take over as the Acting Hall Chairman.

It was gathered from reliable sources that there are allegations against the Chairman that he has not been carrying the HRC and other members of the executive along in the administration of the Hall; there are also allegations that he has also been executing projects in the Hall with unapproved funds.

The issue has continued to generate a lot of controversy due to the fact that Tedder Hall HRC does not have the power to suspend, it only has power to impeach an executive officer based on a written allegation. The allegation is to be presented to the Speaker of the HRC who shall in turn give a copy of the allegation to the affected officer.

The speaker shall by the support of 2/3 majority of the HRC members cause a 4-man panel comprising people who have not shown any special interest in the matter or the officer concerned, to be set up to investigate the allegation and the panel shall have 7 days to do this.

Where the report of the panel is that the allegations against the officer have been proven, then within 7 days of the receipt of the report, the HRC shall by a resolution of 2/3 of its members adopt the report of the panel and may then removethe officer.

This HRC resolution of indefinite suspension has been greeted with a lot of unrest and tension in both arms of government and Tedder Hall at large.

There are views that the exercise was just an egoistic battle of supremacy between the House and the Executive Council of the Hall.

The Hall Chairman was seen carrying out his duties as usual and has described the suspension as a comedy and a child’s play, many tedderites and stakeholders share the same view that if at all the disciplinary powers of the HRC is widened to include the power of suspension, it should follow the due process outlined by the Tedder Hall Constitution under section 13 that deals with removal of officers.

The entire Executive Council is also threatening to resign if the suspension is not withdrawn with immediate effect.
