3, 171 FRESH UITES FINALLY BECOME BONAFIDE UITES

On Monday 23 June, 2014, the fresh men admitted into university of Ibadan for the 2013/2014 academic session had their matriculation ceremony.

A matriculation lecture themed: THE IBADAN BRAND OF UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION: MAKING THE BEST OPPORTUNITIES was delivered by Professor Adedoyin Soyibo, from the department of economics, a former dean of the faculty of the social science.

Using the statue along the Oduduwa road as an illustration, he advised them to use what starts here in UNIBADAN for the effective and positive change of the world. He further encouraged them to maximize the opportunities of being admitted to the university by showing them the class they now belong to with a presentation showing pictures of notable alumni of the university.

Emphasizing the opportunities they now have as students of the great citadel of learning, he urged the new students to take advantage of the centre for entrepreneurship and innovation, he said “It is one of the pioneers of entrepreneurship and innovation in Nigeria and will indeed make you an entrepreneur in whatever you do, no matter the discipline you are into. It is essential’’

The vice-chancellor, while addressing the students admonished them not to join any social or religious group with dubious origins, he said he is only trying to reinforce the advice they had already been given at the orientation programme to shun cultism. He said“Cultism is evil and those who associate themselves with it are evil; you must therefore be wary of the association you keep.You must also be careful in honouring invitations to social or religious gatherings of doubtful character or before you register as a member of a group with cloudy orientation”

 

KUTI, ZIK, BELLO ET AL WELCOME FRESHMEN

From Sunday evening till the following morning, each of the male halls of residence welcomed their new members following the traditions of the individual halls. This was all done before the fresh men took their leave from the halls to the matriculation venue.

Kuti hall initiated the fresh men into the hall of great men as they designed their bodies with paint and made them walk from one hall to another wearing only their boxers and singlet only while Zik hall and Bello hall baptised their fresh men.

 

 

NAAS ORIENTATES FRESHERS

Nigeria Association of Agricultural Students, University of Ibadan chapter organised a week long programme to welcome and enlighten the new students admitted into the faculty.

On the first day of the programme, all the first class students were given a certificate of excellence and the fresh men were urged to do their best and to ignore all kinds of sayings that the faculty is for dullards. This programme also included a tour for the new students to every agricultural institute within the ancient city of Ibadan.

Mr Samuel, the NAAS president, who spoke at the orientation week motivated the freshmen, he encouraged them never to feel dejected over being in the faculty.

 

 

UI POLITICANS DISORGANISE NAAS FRESHERS WELCOME

The supporters of one of the presidential aspirants for the next students’ union election, Odesola Victor popularly called Hunter sola suddenly disrupted the NAAS freshers welcome, held at the First Bank Building on Thursday evening when Hunter sola appeared at the venue of the programme.

Commenting on this ridiculous behaviour exhibited by these politicians was a fresh man who preferred to speak in anonymity, she said “why are they doing all this, when they are not political thugs, I expected from them some level of intellect. If he is like this, then how does he want rule in an intellectual community like ours?”

 

 

FASSA, AFAS WELCOME FRESHERS INTO THE OLDEST FACULTIES ON CAMPUS

Faculty of Science Students Association welcomed the newly admitted student into one of the oldest faculty on the premier campus. The event which was held at the central bank building on Thursday, 26 June, 2014 where UI celebrated artistes; Oxygen and paparazzi entertain the audience with good music, also featuring was dance competition et al among the fresh men.

In a similar vein, the Association of the Faculty of Arts Students was also not left out in the race of welcoming the new students into their faculty. The programme which was held on Friday at the theatre arts practical studio features artiste within and outside the faculty of Arts and the university at large to entertain the fresh men amongst them.

 

VETERINARY MEDICINE INDUCTS NEW DOCTORS INTO PROFESSION

On Wednesday, 25 June, 2014, the faculty of Veterinary Medicine inducted the fresh graduates of the faculty into the noble profession.

Earlier in the week, the faculty association published the names of the inductees and also had an awareness train, moving round the campus to get UITES informed about the induction programme.

 

UISU SUSPENDED PRO FINALLY IMPEACHED

The formerly suspended public relations officer, the students union, University of Ibadan, Mr Ugo Nwaokike was impeached at the sitting of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) held on Sunday, 21 June, 2014.

The impeachment was for acting as the union PRO while still under suspension. He was accused of attending different occasions as the PRO, keeping with him some of the union’s valuable properties and still being in control of the PRO’s office during the suspension period.

Mr Ugo Nwaokike was suspended at the SRC meeting held on March 1, 2014 for not allowing the disciplinary committee of the SRC to carry out their investigations on a petition levied against him.

UI TRADE FAIR WITNESSES LOW TURN-OUT

The Students’ Union in partnership with some student entrepreneurs organised a trade fair for the students on the premier campus thereby bringing close to them, necessities.

The long week programme started on Tuesday, 24th June, 2014 at the UI sport pavilion opposite the SU Building witness a low turn-out from the UITES. Speaking with our correspondent was the Smile agent saying “what has affected the trade fair is that the publicity was poor and the location of the market is wrong. That is what I can say”. But the Glo agent present, who was identified as Segun disagreed with latter when he said no matter the venue of the trade fair, if the publicity was good, the low turn-out wouldn’t be an issue.

However all the marketers at the fair were optimistic of better turn-out from UItes as the programme continue.
