‘If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman’- Margaret Thatcher
In this age and time, there still exists a perceived reservation of politics for the men folks. This discernment is often bases on the insinuations that women’s job is to occupy the kitchens and do domestic works at the home front. From time immemorial, politics has been seen to be the affairs of men and most people forget to understand that women are the oil that engines the men.
In the same vein, the misconception plays out among the male folks whenever a woman aspires for elective posts. We have observed situations where women are forcefully discouraged from taking an active part in politics by the male folks. Some people have the negative feelings that women cannot be allowed to govern a man; simply because men are the head.
Happenings have proven that women have what it takes to take elective posts; as they always perform much better than men do whenever the mandate is given to them. Examples abound. In Liberia, a female has been the president of the country for years with great achievements to her credit. Women should be given a fair chance at competing with men, as every country deserves to have the best leading light. If women are never allowed to compete, the countries are really robbing themselves of a great deal of talents. We must discontinue the violent nature of politics, the cultural and social norm as well as the general attitude that women’s place is at home and not in the public space.
We should disregard such political beliefs that a woman is not capable of governing a particular organization or country on the ground that she is a weak vessel. Human beings are not automated machines. There are weak men as well. We need to give women the encouragement and support they need in performing well; after all, behind every successful man is a woman.
Conclusively, women’s contributions are crucial to building a strong and vibrant society. It is essential to support them in taking leadership positions because they are highly committed in promoting national and local policies. Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country.
