The Students Union Executive Council (SUEC) is yet to respond to the demand of the students for a call for Congress on Saturday, 27th of July, less than 24 hours ahead.
This call for Congress is coming over a week after the widespread protests that held to demand better welfare for students, the outcome of which led to some resolutions, including the suspension of the deadline for school fees, criminalizing sales of handouts, debunking of the electricity rationing memo, among others.
As a follow-up to this mass action, the students have now called for a Congress to review the resolutions of the protest especially with regards to fee hike.
“We, students of the University of Ibadan consider it imperative that a congress of students be called on Saturday, 27th of July, 2024.
“This, being to review the dividends of the last mass action and to chart way forward, especially with regards to fee hike, among other demands,“ the letter addressed to the union’s president read in part.
However, in line with ArticleXIII(b) of the SU Constitution, which mandates the President to direct the General Secretary to summon the Congress upon receiving receipts of 250 signatories of the students, Aweda Bolaji is yet to effect this.

UCJUI has also reached out to him via calls (WhatsApp & offline) and also sent text (including SMS) but he’s yet to respond to any of these, as of press time.
“I thought the events of last week’s protests would have thought the executive committee a thing or two about slacking on pressing issues, but apparently not. They are still the same. And at this point, I am tired of the back and forth. I strongly suggest resignation to the lot of them,” said Asiwaju Babatimehin Peace, an Honorable member, while reacting to the silence of the SU leadership on the call for Congress.
