Following the inauguration of the UISU SRC 9th assembly and the election which saw the emergence of Hon. Eniola Olatoye as the Speaker, Hon. Umar Adeyemi, an aspirant for the position, has registered his grievances regarding the electioneering process.
The 9th assembly was inaugurated on Saturday, November 20, 2021, and the representatives elected principal officers at the inaugural sitting.
Adeyemi who represents Abdulsalam Abubakar hall was disqualified from the Speakership election, while the election was contested by Eniola Olatoye and Muhammed Adebisi from Queen Idia hall and The Independence hall respectively.
Meanwhile, Adeyemi who was disqualified without any prior notice has protested via writing.
In a statement he released today, November 21, he described as “unjust” his disqualification from the Speakership race by the former Speaker, Omitoyin Oluwaferanmi.
Adeyemi alleged that the former Speaker requested for a letter of intent and the evidence of Hall membership as well as academic transcripts which he considered a political game and a manipulative agenda by Omitoyin.
Regardless of this, he reportedly sent all the requested documents to the Speaker.
“I saw this act as a fishy game in the air. However, to fulfill all righteousness, I forwarded the letter to him before the expiration date as he requested on or before 17th November.” He explained to UCJ.
The postgraduate student further explained that he could not have access to any of his results until he finishes his programme as that is the custom in the Postgraduate school.
Also, Hon. Umar argued that he is a nonresident member of Abdulsalam hall because there are no more bed spaces in the hall due to the Covid-19 rules set by the School. However, he forwarded the evidence of his hall allocation to the Speaker as an attestation to his claim.
He stressed further that he was surprised when the election process started yesterday and the Speaker deliberately excluded his name, even after submitting the necessary documents, with copious explanations.
“At the election yesterday, the Speaker after the dissolution of the 8th Assembly called for the inauguration of the 9th Assembly. To my greatest surprise, he didn’t call any nomination for the post of Speaker. He only called out two other aspirants and intentionally excluded my name.” He lamented.
Adeyemi argued that since the conditions given by the former Speaker does not affect his membership of the Students’ Representative Council, they should not affect his qualification to contest the Speakership election in the House
