A sum of N600,000 has been approved by the 9th Assembly of the Students Representative Council for the Union’s running cost, and airtime and data subscription from December to March.
The approval was granted at the Council’s sitting held on Saturday, 11 December, 2021 at the SRC Chamber in the Kunle Adepeju Building.
The Students’ Union President, Adewole Adeyinka had presented N500,000 for running cost but it was reduced to N300,000 after scrutiny by legislative members
The running cost is meant to cater for the activities of the Union from December 2021 to March 2022 as the SRC was yet to deliberate on the Union’s budget approval which is pending until the council’s next seating and subject to the recommendations of the union’s Budget and Planning Committee.
The 9th Assembly also approved a sum of N300,000 for airtime and data subscription for the executives in a period of 3 months (December to February).
However, Hon. Adebisi from Independence Hall called the attention of the Council to the possibility that the executives may be spending as high as N1.5 million naira for a year on airtime and data subscription considering that there are still a series of activities for them to do and that the Union is not financially buoyant.
In her response, the speaker, Rt. Hon. Eniola Olatoye, stated that the only way out is to balance it up when making approval for the rest of the calendar in March because the motion for N300,000 had already been passed.
Meanwhile, the executive council also proposed to purchase Tricycles in order to ease the stress of transportation on campus especially for students residing in the Obafemi Awolowo Hall. Adeyinka explained that the tricycles would also serve as a source of income to the Union.
Members of the SRC debated on which brand of tricycle to purchase, either BAJAJ or TVS. It was later concluded that the research on the best brand be conducted by the technical committee.
The Union intends to get 5 tricycles in which the purchase of 3 will be sponsored.
Also included in the document presented by the Union’s President was the budget for the office of the General Secretary and the House Secretary. The Council suspended the deliberation and approval until the proposed budget passes through the budget and planning committee.
