REPORT: ‘Protest Resumes Tomorrow’ – UISU President, Aweda Bolaji says in response to UCH Light Restoration

The President of the University of Ibadan Students Union (SU), Aweda Bolaji, has confirmed that protest would resume on Thursday, 13th of February, 2025, following report that power has been restored at UCH whilst school hostels are still in darkness.

“We have been duly informed that there is now light at the University College Hospital (UCH) complex. As a matter of fact there is light in the school of Nursing hostel but not in our own hostel [Alexander Brown Hall & Ayodele Falase Postgraduate Hall] and as said in our release yesterday (Tuesday), any attempt to reconnect UCH without our hostels would lead to the shutdown of UCH itself,” He said in part, expressly.

Recall that on Monday, 10th of February, 2024, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, had a meeting with management of the University College Hospital (UCH), managing director of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), to fashion out a solution to the epileptic power supply, which has persisted for over 100 days now.

Following this meeting, the Minister addressed protesting students and make a promise that due to his intervention power would be systematically restored to UCH within 24-48 hours. As of now, UCJUI can confirm that power has been restored to UCH Hospital complex but the College of Medicine, Students Hostels (Alexander Brown Hall & Ayodele Falase), are still in darkness.

Meanwhile, the Students’ Union already raise concern on Tuesday, February 12th, through a release about a rumored ploy to connect part of UCH while excluding the students’ hostels, which it has strongly condemned and kicked against.
