After years of cooking with the green kerosene stoves in the halls of residence, University of Ibadan students have received approval to switch to cooking gas, following a new decision by the University Management.
The approval, which takes effect from the next academic session, was announced by the University of Ibadan Students’ Union on Sunday, November 1, 2026, following what the Union described as several administrative engagements, discussions and commitments between students’ representatives and the University Management.
The announcement, signed by the Students’ Union President, Temidayo Adeboye, and General Secretary, Joshua O. Shontan, stated that “considerable attention was given to ensuring that the necessary safety measures were in place before the approval was granted”.
According to the Union, safety considerations were among the major factors that delayed the conclusion of the decision.
However, the approval comes with a condition that “students must discontinue the use of cooking stoves in the halls of residence”. The Union explained that the simultaneous use of cooking stoves and cooking gas could pose significant safety risks, making the discontinuation of kerosene stoves a requirement under the new arrangement.
The Union consequently urged students to take note of the development and make the necessary preparations ahead of the next academic session.
It also appreciated the University Management for its cooperation and students for their patience throughout the process.
The decision marks a change in the cooking arrangements permitted within the university’s halls of residence, with students expected to comply with the safety requirements attached to the approval.
