What comes to your mind when you hear the word “honey”? Most people see honey as a rich source of natural sugars like fructose and glucose along with essential vitamins, mineral and antioxidants. It is used as substitute for sugar in baking, used for drinking tea, golden morn and other beverages. This golden liquid has powerful ways to prevent various diseases.

It might be surprising to know that honey has tremendous effect on the skin and hair. It acts as a great anti-aging agent and moisturizer. It is rich in natural antioxidants that have anti-microbial properties. They help protect your skin from harmful UV rays and facilitate the skin’s ability to rejuvenate. Honey also has the ability to absorb and retain moisture and this helps in keeping the skin well hydrated, fresh and supple. It is known that ancient women used honey and milk to keep the skin youthful, radiant and smooth.

Honey, especially raw or unpasteurized, is a fabulously versatile and all-natural ingredient to use on the skin. It’s full of antioxidants, which are good for wrinkles and aging skin. It clarifies the skin by opening up and unclogging pores. It is also a great moisturizer that soothes irritation and blemishes, and it leaves a lovely after glow.

  1. Moisturize Dry skin: Honey is a fantastic moisturizer, especially on dry patches, like your elbows or hands – even lips! Rub onto your dry, patchy skin and let it sit for about 30 minutes before washing off. Honey is a great lip balm.
  2. Condition Damaged Hair: Honey is a great natural conditioner. You can simply add a teaspoon of the stuff to regular shampoo to smooth your damaged locks. Let it soak for 20 minutes with your hair wrapped in a towel before shampooing as usual.
  3. Give yourself a facial: Combine 2 teaspoons of milk with 2 teaspoons of honey. Cover your face with the mixture and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing.
  4. Honey skin lotion: If you are feeling that dry winter skin coming on, mix a spoonful of honey with a teaspoon of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice (a natural skin brightener). Apply this lotion to dry areas and let sit for 20 minutes. Wipe off with a warm washcloth.
  5. Honey exfoliates: Use this scrub once a week to soften and clarify your skin. Mix 2 parts honey with 1 part baking soda and rub into your face. This is also good for a full body scrub.
  6. Honey facial cleanser: Honey is good at dissolving makeup residue, especially when mixed with gentile oil. Combine honey and jojoba OR coconut oil to create an easily spreadable texture. Rub it into your skin, avoiding eye area, to loosen makeup and unclog pores. Rinse with warm water.
  7. Honey hair shine-boosting rinse: Combine a spoonful of honey with quart of warm water. Rinse through hair after shampooing. Let it condition for an hour, then rinse.
  8. Honey helps to maintain healthy hair: It helps retain moisture and get rid of dry, itchy flakes on your scalp. It helps keep your hair clean, lustrous, healthy and shiny.

Heat together three tablespoons of olive oil with two tablespoons of honey, add a tablespoon of lemon juice and mix well. Apply the mixture to the scalp and hair when still warm, leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse and wash off.
